Leicester City Funny Goal Leicester City Memes
Leicester end the season in eighth place, overtaking Wolves after Liverpool's 3-1 comeback win over Bruno Lage's men. It will be a long three months without a league game, however, for 15th-placed Southampton, who end the campaign in dire form after being on the wrong end of a rout at the King Power Stadium.
Well, we asked whether we'd see more entertainment after the break, and Leicester did not disappoint! Maddison and Vardy scored a goal apiece to put them in control, with Perez coming off the bench to grab a superb double after Ward-Prowse halved the arrears. It's a fantastic end to a largely underwhelming season for the Foxes, but Southampton end the campaign on a six-match winless run.
90' + 7' FULL-TIME: LEICESTER CITY 4-1 SOUTHAMPTON.
90' + 6' Pereira did brilliantly on the overlap before timing his pass to Perez to perfection, and it's a fantastic final-day win for Leicester!
90' + 6' GOOOAAAL! Perez has his second goal, and Leicester have their fourth! It's 4-1 to the hosts as Pereira is played in behind on the Foxes' right, and he cuts back for the substitute to hammer into the roof of the net to make the points safe!
90' + 5' Lookman is released down the left after Leicester win possession on halfway. The winger opts to recycle possession, however, with the Foxes just two minutes away from ending the season with a win.
90' + 4' Perez is crowded out by two Southampton shirts as he looks to wriggle into the area on the right. The visitors have possession in their own half now, with Leicester quickly getting back into shape as they sit on their advantage.
90' + 3' Smallbone replaces Romeu now, as the visitors make their fourth and final change.
90' + 2' To Southampton's credit, they've been much improved since falling two goals behind, but Hassenhuttl must be absolutely furious to have seen them give up a third goal immediately after Ward-Prowse's penalty put them back in the game.
90' We're into a minimum of seven minutes of added time, as Fofana makes a brilliant challenge on Ward-Prowse as the Saints skipper shaped to shoot.
88' Fofana steps in to prevent Long from leading a Southampton attack on the left wing. The Saints come again, but Salisu fouls his man at the back post as he looks to meet Ward-Prowse's cross, and the pressure subsides.
86' Leicester fail to release Vardy in behind as they hunt a fourth goal at the end of a promising break. Less than five minutes remain at the King Power Stadium, but we're expecting a lengthy amount of injury time after that earlier clash of heads between Armstrong and Evans.
85' It should be noted that both sides are able to use another substitution because Armstrong's earlier withdrawal came under the league's concussion protocols.
84' No! The Southampton skipper fires over the crossbar from the set-peice, and it remains 3-1.
83' Southampton win a free-kick in a dangerous position, slightly to the right of the penalty area, as Ward-Prowse stands over the ball. This game has exploded into life in the last few minutes. Can Southampton provide another twist?
83' Meanwhile, Long is on for Redmond. Hasenhuttl will be absolutely furious with Southampton conceding a second mere moments after being handed a route back into the contest.
82' Amartey is being introduced for Leicester now, with Maddison withdrawn after his superb assist.
81' Maddison was at his creative best when claiming the assist for that goal, bending a lovely cross into Perez's path as the the Foxes restore their two-goal advantage.
81' GOOOAAAAL! 3-1 Leicester, and surely its game over now! Maddson receives the ball on the left-wing, before opening up his body and picking out Perez with a brilliant cross to the far post. The substitute does well to get over the ball, and sends a low volley past McCarthy to restore the hosts' two-goal cushion!
J. Ward-Prowse
Penalty Goal
79' Goaaaal! Ward-Prowse puts Southampton back in the game as he rifles the penalty into the bottom-left corner! Schmeichel had no chance, and its game on at the King Power Stadium!
78' Penalty Southampton! It's a lifeline for the visitors as Stuart Armstrong dribbles inside from the right and goes down under Tielemans' mistimed challenge. The VAR has taken a look, and the spot-kick is awarded!
77' Lookman replaces Barnes in the Foxes' third change.
74' Barnes claims the assist after a superb run from deep, and it looks to be his last contribution of the season, with Lookman ready to enter the fray.
74' GOOOOAAAAL! It's 2-0 to Leicester, and that should be that! Barnes scampers towards halfway before releasing Vardy with a well-timed ball down the left. The Foxes striker cuts inside a Southampton defender before finishing coolly past McCarthy at his near post, as he grabs his 15th league goal of the season.
74' Should Southampton fall to a defeat here, they will have taken just five points in the Premier League since the start of March. Hasenhuttl could do with a result to ease the pressure building at St Mary's. Can they find a leveller?
73' Barnes catches Walker-Peters on the Southampton right, and the visitors get a free-kick deep inside their own half.
M. Djenepo
M. Elyounoussi
72' Hasenhuttl introduces Djenepo with his second substitution, with Elyounoussi withdrawn.
Ricardo Pereira
T. Castagne
70' Pereira replaces Castagne at right-back as the Foxes make their second change.
69' Romeu becomes the first man to enter the referee's book for a challenge on Perez.
69' Chance! Leicester set Vardy away down the left after regaining possession, but the striker is unable to get his shot away after beating both Lycanco and Stephens. The latter recovered to make a decent challenge on the Foxes forward, and the score remains 1-0.
68' Perez leads a promising break through the centre as the contest opens up, before falling under a challenge as he approached the Saints area. Vardy latched onto the loose ball, but his weak left-footed effort is easy for McCarthy to claim.
67' Better from Southampton as they work some space for Elyounoussi on the left. His cross is a tad overhit, however, and Adams' weak header floats harmlessly wide.
66' Tielemans scythes down Redmond on halfway after failing to control a pass from Mendy. That's poor from the Belgian, and it allows Southampton to regain possession.
64' Decent opening for Southampton! Redmond meets a left-wing cross with a firm header, but Schmeichel is well-positioned to claim the ball. That's arguably the closest the Saints have come in this game.
Ayoze Pérez
K. Dewsbury-Hall
63' Meanwhile, Perez replaces Dewsbury-Hall as Leicester respond with a change of their own.
62' Adams is replacing Armstrong, who walks from the pitch after receiving more treatment. Hopefully the striker is okay after that clash of heads.
60' Southampton clear the danger as Barnes looks to work an attack down the left. But Armstrong has sat back down again, and will surely have to be taken off.
58' Both men have been bandaged up and are back on their feet to applause from the crowd. It was a horrible collision and its great to see both players are okay.
56' Both men are still receiving treatment, and Southampton appear to be questioning why they weren't given the ball from a drop-ball prior to Leicester's goal, after that earlier collision between Vardy and Romeu.
55' Adam Armstrong and Evans are involved in a horrible clash of heads, and both players are receiving treatment after being cut when competing for a loose ball.
53' Chance for 2-0! Barnes has Vardy completely free to his right after the hosts work a two-on-one situation, but he runs straight into Lyanco as the visitors escape. Terrible decision-making from Barnes, and the Foxes should really be two goals up.
51' Bizarre scenes reigned in the aftermath of that goal, with the officials apparently investigating an off-the-ball incident. Vardy was locked in debate with the Southampton players for a while, but the Saints eventually get the ball rolling again, 1-0 down.
49' GOAAAAAL! Maddison gives Leicester a 1-0 lead! That is absolutely dreadful from Southampton! Lyanco heads a long ball directly up in the air, and then doesn't get enough on his second header as he looks to divert it back to McCarthy. Vardy pokes the loose ball straight at the goalkeeper, but Maddison is on hand to tap home the rebound.
49' Now Vardy has gone down after an off-ball clash with Romeu. The Spaniard appeared to block the striker off as he looked to set off on a run forward, but has escaped any punishment.
48' Elyounoussi's studs were very high on the Leicester man's shin there, and I'm very surprised he's not been issued a card of either colour.
47' Elyounoussi leaves Fofana in a heap with a reckless challenge after mis-controlling the ball. VAR appears to have had a look at that and decided to let it slide, but it looked like a very nasty collision…
47' Prior to this match, Leicester had scored 26 and conceded 33 goals in their 15 closing day games in the Premier League – their overall average of 3.93 goals-per-game was the highest on the final day of any side to have competed in more than five seasons of the competition. We've not been treated to that kind of entertainment yet here, will we see some goals in the second half?
46' We're underway for the final 45 minutes of the season as Leicester get the ball rolling, with no changes for either team.
Vardy has been the liveliest Foxes attacker, coming close to diverting Dewsbury-Hall's tempting cross into the back of the net shortly before half-time. As for Southampton, they've found themselves in some excellent positions on the break, but haven't found the necessary quality to test Schmeichel. Will that change in the second half?
Jon Moss blows for the interval without adding on any stoppage time, and we're still goalless at the King Power Stadium. After a frantic start to the contest, the pace has really dropped, with Castagne's early header the best chance created by either team. Leicester have probably shown the greater attacking intent, can they grab a winner after the break?
45' HALF-TIME: LEICESTER CITY 0-0 SOUTHAMPTON.
45' Adam Armstrong tries to beat Fofana for pace on the Southampton right, but fouls the Leicester defender after losing possession. The Foxes have really missed his presence for much of this season.
44' Maddison tries to release Castagne with a quick throw-in, but Stephens does well to clear despite losing his footing, before Evans is forced into a strong challenge on Walker-Peters as the visitors look to break.
42' Evans manhandles Adam Armstrong as the duo compete for a bouncing ball, then flies into a challenge on Stuart Armstrong which leaves the Scot grounded. The former Manchester United defender concedes a free-kick, but might be lucky to have escaped a yellow card.
40' Close! Leicester keep the Saints pinned back, and Castagne whips a delightful ball in behind the Southampton defence. Vardy looks set to divert it home, but is just unable to make contact as he slides towards goal, and the visitors escape.
39' Leicester win a corner on the left-hand side, but Maddison's delivery is hammered clear by Salisu. The Foxes come again through Dewsbury-Hall, but he overhits his pass and gifts the visitors possession.
37' With both Wolves and Brighton and Hove Albion drawing elsewhere, Leicester are currently set to finish ninth in the table, while Southampton are 15th as it stands.
35' Stuart Armstrong is left in a heap by Mendy's challenge on halfway, but the referee opts not to book the Foxes man, much to the visitors' frustration.
34' Southampton win a corner as Justin is forced to clear a dangerous ball towards Redmond… But the delivery is comfortably dealt with by the hosts. Salisu goes down after catching a forearm from Evans in the box, but it was accidental and the Saints defender quickly gets back to his feet.
32' Barnes looks to slalom through the Southampton defence but is crowded out by the Saints' rearguard, much to Vardy's frustration. After an end-to-end start to the game, it's taken on a distinctly end-of-season feel in the last few minutes.
30' Ward-Prowse lashes a wild effort over the bar after receiving a pass from Adam Armstrong, attracting ironic cheers from the crowd. It certainly wasn't the best effort we've seen from the Premier League Player of the Season nominee.
29' Dewsbury-Hall now picks out Vardy with a brilliant ball in behind, but Stephens sticks with the Leicester number nine and calmy takes possession from him. Southampton then launch a break of their own through Elyounoussi, but Evans steps in to stop them in their tracks.
27' Barnes and Dewsbury-Hall link up well on the left for the Foxes, but the latter's cut-back is cleared before the wideman could race onto the ball on the edge of the area.
25' Southampton are beginning to struggle to get a foot on the ball now, as Mendy and Tielemans dictate the play inside the Foxes' half.
23' Vardy now lashes a fierce ball across the Southampton area after breaking behind the Saints' rearguard, but is flagged offside.
22' Vardy goes down under pressure from Stephens after latching onto a fine ball in behind, but the collision looked accidental, and Jon Moss – overseeing his final game as a Premier League referee – waves play on.
21' Leicester striker Vardy has scored six goals on the final day of the Premier League – only Harry Kane (8) has netted more among players currently playing in the competition. Vardy is also the Foxes' top Premier League goalscorer this term with 14 strikes – can he hit his 15th of the season in this contest?
20' A flowing move from Leicester ends with Barnes flicking the ball into Vardy's path on the left of the Southampton box, but the striker is just unable to get his shot away and is crowded out.
18' Adam Armstrong breaks the Leicester offside trap on the left-hand side, but none of his team-mates are able to meet his fierce ball across the face of goal, and the Foxes can clear.
16' Wide from Barnes! Leicester win the ball back high up the pitch before Maddison glides past two Southampton challenges. The midfielder picks out Barnes on the left, who cuts inside and bends his shot wide. Unlucky!
14' Adam Armstrong finds some space between the lines and picks out his namesake Stuart Armstrong with a deftly weighted ball. The wideman slips as he enters the Leicester box, however, and the chance is gone. It's been an entertaining contest so far, though.
12' An excellent give-and-go allows Castagne to break in behind on the Leicester right, but his cross is cleared before it can reach Barnes inside the six-yard box.
11' Leicester are seeing a bit more of the ball now after Southampton made a fast start to the contest, but Tielemans is crowded out by Salisu and Redmond on the right-wing, allowing the visitors to regain possession.
9' Vardy almost takes the ball off McCarthy's toes as the Southampton keeper prepares to punt the ball upfield! Another close call for the visitors!
8' Its been a lively start to this end-of-season affair, with both sides leading promising breaks and having opportunities to deliver set-pieces, but Castagne should really have given the Foxes an early lead.
7' Southampton have won just three of their last 23 Premier League away games (D6 L14). The Saints have also alternated between a draw and a defeat in their last six on the road, losing 3-0 at Brentford last time out. They'll be desperate to improve on their dire form here as the pressure grows on Hasenhuttl.
6' Great chance! Maddison gets a second opportunity to deliver after the corner is cleared. His cross is inch perfect for Castagne, but the Belgium international heads over the bar when left completely unmarked inside the six-yard box, as the first big chance of the game goes begging.
4' Barnes and Vardy lead a promising break for the Foxes, and the latter's cross is diverted away by Lyanco for a corner to the home side…
3' The Saints have a second corner in quick succession after Stuart Armstrong's cross is diverted behind. Ward-Prowse delivers the kick, but Evans is there to head clear.
2' Nothing comes from the Southampton set-piece, and the ball quickly ends up all the way back with McCarthy.
2' It looks very much like a back three for Southampton early on, with Salisu and Lycano flanking Stephens at the back, as the visitors win a corner through Walker-Peters.
1' We're underway for the final time this season as the visitors get the ball rolling!
The teams are out and kick-off is just moments away!
Since beating QPR 5-1 in 2014-15, Leicester haven't won their final league game in any of the last six seasons, drawing three and losing three. Can the Foxes end their below-par campaign with a victory here, and potentially climb as high as eighth in the process?
The visitors also make three changes to their lineup, as they bid to end a five-match winless run. Adam and Stuart Armstrong are two of the men introduced since their 2-1 loss to Liverpool, with Romeu reinstated alongside Ward-Prowse in midfield.
Rodgers makes three changes from the Foxes side which drew at Chelsea on Thursday, introducing Justin, Tielemans, and Barnes from the start. Vardy leads the line, looking for his 15th Premier League goal of the season. Amongst all active players in the competition, only Harry Kane (8) has more final-day goals than the Leicester striker's six.
SUBS: Willy Caballero, Shane Long, Che Adams, Moussa Djenepo, Will Smallbone, Ibrahima Diallo, Theo Walcott, Jan Bednarek, Yan Valery.
SOUTHAMPTON (5-4-1): Alex McCarthy; Kyle Walker-Peters, Mohammed Salisu, Jack Stephens, Lyanco, Nathan Redmond; Stuart Armstrong, Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse, Mohamed Elyounoussi; Adam Armstrong.
SUBS: Danny Ward, Caglar Soyuncu, Marc Albrighton, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ayoze Perez, Daniel Amartey, Ricardo Pereira, Patson Daka, Ademola Lookman.
LEICESTER CITY (4-3-3): Kasper Schmeichel; James Justin, Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana, Timothy Castagne; Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall; Nampalys Mendy, Youri Tielemans; James Maddison, Jamie Vardy, Harvey Barnes.
While neither of these sides has anything substantial to play for on the final day, both will be desperate to end their campaigns on a high. Brendan Rodgers' hosts can finish as high as eighth if results elsewhere go their way, while Ralph Hasenhuttl needs to inject some positivity after the Saints picked up just one point from their last five games.
