  1. A few points:
    1. This is a huge historic period grouping. Generalisations about a 75yo will be totally unlike to a 60yo. Most time to break information technology down a bit more.
    2. Whenever advertisers think a bear witness is for 55+, the only ads they show are for life, funeral insurance or retirement funds. Very tiresome.
iii. I think finding out what the older people don't sentinel would be more interesting, rather than a recital of the same shows that everyone else is watching as well.
iv. If an advertiser can gain a new sale from a 55yo, then it is probable that they volition and so have a xx+ year loyal client. A 20yo would not generally stay loyal for that long.

    1. The problem to me is the quality of the shows, many don't have that same 'feel' most them like the older ones. Kids are as well advised, violence reins in most episodes, swearing, sexual references, drug and alcohol abuse by people whoyou would want to put your trust in, in real life. Thats why I like NCIS, they at to the lowest degree have characters you can follow easily and the humour helps to break up the 'bad bits'. Not to mention some of the acting is awful in some of the new shows. And to me, the worse things are, everyone is either having an affair, are pregnant with their partners child or someone elses, have besides much much attitude making them unlikeable. Some of the females are full of themselves which i don't like, but thats just how I see them.

      1. Your comments are spot on. I oasis't yet reached that demographic, but I find very few new shows appealing. A glut of crime/violence shows makes information technology hard to find something fresh. Characters hop from bed to bed in a totally unrealistic manner, and as you say, writers seem unable to create a story without adultery or one night stands. Female characters are often very unattractive in personality.

Because of this, it is not surprising that the older group are following older, quality shows to the streaming services.

  2. I'thou well over 55 but of the 44 shows listed I only watch 4 of them. Some of these shows I had to look upwardly equally I hadn't heard of them. I never watch the news commonly as 99% of information technology is fluff.

    1. I concord middledog….new shows are just garbage…and I but watch about 8 shows out of the whole listing…I too am well over 55 and I all the same call back the way they work out ratings (and related figures) is besides a load of garbage.

  3. You will note that the times are usual pinnacle FTA viewing hours of approximately vi.xxx PM to 9 PM, I would be interested to know gender preferences peculiarly for soap opera and reality / games shows. No reference for streaming or Pay Television set?, over 50'south are a lot more tech savvy than they are given credit for.

  4. Hither'south what this 56 year old watches: The Americans, NCIS (original but), Outcast, Gotham, Hawaii Five-0, Scorpion, MacGyver, Humans, Mr Robot, Legion, Preacher, Westworld, The Homo In The High Castle, Sense8, Orange Is The New Black, 12 Monkeys, Black Mirror, Fargo, Once Upon A Time, Archer, Bob's Burgers, American Horror Story, From Dusk Till Dawn, Better Telephone call Saul, Twin Peaks, 10-Files, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and probably a couple of others.

Complimentary To Air Telly is all simply gone for me, basically information technology'southward Anh Do, Dwelling Commitment QI, The Book Club, with top ups from iView and SBS On Demand. I rotate between Netflix (United states feed mainly), Stan, Amazon Prime number, Hulu and some Movies and hard to gets I hire off Google Play.

  5. As a 55+ I don't watch any "Reality" and since retiring "Lifestyle" has gone too. Advertisers won't achieve me on Social Media. Equally a group, many of us are debt-free and we have more than disposable income than any other age demo, nevertheless the advertisers go after the "absurd" & "hip". Cocky-indulgence isn't limited to the young.

    1. Truthful that…. 🙂

    2. Neither do we watch 'Lifestyle', or 'Reality' and we are in our 60's. Cooking shows yes, just the 'normal' ones where they actually cook something yous can eat. The godo ole' shows as well like Bewitched, MASH.Jag, Judging Amy….

  6. Information technology doesn't make sense to me why 55+ aren't counted. 55+ have grown up with FTA, most have stuck past this platform and are most probable to watch more TV as they go older as they simply don't get out every bit much. Is it just hip and cool to just become afterward the younger marketplace? My female parent is 80 years quondam. She has money, she is notwithstanding a consumer and she watches ads on TV. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

    1. Sure, older people obviously still buy groceries, pay for utilities, a bit of petrol if they're still driving, accept the occasional prowl, etc. However, as a general rule, they don't spend anywhere as about as much equally younger adults who buy more junk food, replace wear and electronic goods much more frequently, and are perhaps starting out on the road of filling a firm (and garden) with stuff.

Compare the expenditure profile of a family unit of 2 + 2 teenage kids with a unmarried person over 70 and you tin can see where the money is. It's non hip, it'due south business sense.

      1. Well manifestly you have not been to my house …or my friends….nosotros spend like teenagers…considering we now have the funds…and no responsibilities…Spend on gardens….often buying things for the house…unremarkably at this time of life…many things need replacing…always buying clothes…and bits for the house…….and nosotros all eat out ..quite a fleck….or order in….The old folk yous know seem to be a bit stuck dorsum in time…

    2. Like to Clandestine Squïrrel however a bit more than info likewise as a 56 twelvemonth old.

I'm fix in my ways and rarely going to change what I buy, for instance I use a Gillette SensorExcel Razor, short of the handle breaking on information technology I'm not going to get out and buy a different brand or style at present. Same goes for most consumables, I have what i like and am not really going to be swayed by an advert to change, maybe in the way I purchase things just rarely a production. As well on the rare occasions I see an advertisement I tend to recollect differently, a recent Cadbury ad for case they introduced new flavours and I thought "Sales must be down and their trying to become people back."

I have what I need and barring items breaking or breaking down, I'g not going to buy simply for the sake of buying. I had a gear up-top box on my 16:9 CRT TV for ages and never updated until I needed to, aforementioned as I'm not buying a 4k Television…

    3. Networks go after youngsters as they're more attractive to advertisers for the reasons you state. The over 55s are more likely to exist watching FTA and hence run across ads, significant shows that do get younger eyeballs on the adverts are more bonny as they're a more difficult demographic to reach on Idiot box at least.

      1. What they are also missing is that people moving into that over fifty age group now are also internet savvy, so like me have no problem agreement how to go Netflix, Stan a VPN etc. As well like say with Twin Peaks, take away the 25 years and I was 31 when it aired well in that xviii-49 age group they require and the historic period grouping that gave it ratings. Forth with shows like The X-Files, Northern Exposure, Sentinel Fences and etc., basically what yous would call the quirker shows I estimate. So now (for me at least), that is what I get on the streaming services, the Mr. Robots, Legions, Fargos, Humans, Westworlds and the like, guess what I am proverb is people my historic period (56), that I know rarely watch FTA anymore, it'southward an old idea. Myself and the friends that do watch any FTA exercise so via recording it and skipping ads, equally a lot of usa got used to in first the days of VCR's, then recordable DVD's and now…

  7. Very interesting commodity David, thank yous.

Ever wondered exactly what 'older' viewers were watching.

  8. Interesting insight! Perchance the 55+ crowd lookout a little more news and ABC so those nether 55, but there are just more people in that age subclass watching linear TV than those under, and equally the population ages there volition be more total people over 55 than under (if that'southward not the case already). These viewers shouldn't be ignored.

    1. Just heard on the news tonight…either Ten or SBS….that there are more people over 65 than under 30…
this was from 2009…The earth is most to cross a demographic landmark of huge social and economic importance, with the proportion of the global population 65 and over set to outnumber children nether five for the first time…
Guess they better start taking detect…

  9. Why are these people the forgotten ones? I autumn into this category. Surely advertisers encounter us equally potential. I know many older folk who picket Boob tube on a Goggle box non streaming or downloading shows. Maybe they need to include these people in surveys…….

  10. Well , close for me, but non everything listed

  11. We watch Murdock Mysteries as well. We take found this prove a weekly favourite. Its great how Murdock often finds a way to use modernistic engineering dorsum in the belatedly 1890'southward. I think its nether rated.

    1. I get annoyed when it is advertised every bit British….it is Canadian…

      1. Yes, I take to tell people that has well.
