Exotic simply Kid-Friendly: 7 Top Spots for Family Vacations (UPDATED 2021)
I traveled to Europe with my guidebook-writing parents for the first time when I was four months former. When it came to traveling with my ain kids, though, I was more than conservative: I waited until my eldest was 8-months-old before we took her abroad (to Japan) for the first time.
My kids may non remember everywhere they've been, but they understand, in an elemental way, that their manner of life is just ane of many. Maybe equally chiefly, they've learned that for all the differences there are from civilisation to culture, in that location are just as many commonalities. That in every civilization, parents love their children, hope for a amend future, and work towards that hereafter in whatever way they can. I recall my kids' travels make them more than compassionate, smarter homo beings. But so, I'grand biased.
Hither are some strange destinations that I tin personally recommend for your 2020 family vacation. Some may surprise yous.

Belize
Looking back I have i worry about the trip I took with my daughters to Belize: how nosotros'll ever elevation it!
For a solid week and a half, they didn't debate once (a minor miracle!). They simply didn't take the fourth dimension or energy to do so, between rappelling downward cliffs, scaling waterfalls within Mayan-artifact laden caves, climbing ancient temples and going on intense nature hikes into the rainforest. My picky eater elder girl fifty-fifty ate an ant at the urging of a guide (they can be a skilful source of protein if you're lost in the jungle apparently). She declared it "minty", with a big smile.
For your own trip to Belize, I highly recommend you separate your time between the beachy resort towns and the jungly interior so yous get a sense of taste of all the adventures the country has to offer. Final perk: this is an English-speaking country.

Ireland
What struck me most about Ireland, when I took my wee bairns there for the outset time, was how welcome children are, pretty much everywhere. Even the pubs allow little ones; parents can bask a pint while listening to a session (live music) as the wee ones play with one some other in a corner of the room. How civilized! This was allowed in the late afternoon and early evening at least.
The welcome at Republic of ireland's B&B's was a particularly warm i, more often than not considering we were being hosted, almost entirely, by other parents. In fact, I'd hazard the guess that that'south why the Emerald Isle has and so many B&B's: parents with large families need to make full the extra rooms once their kids take fled the coop. I'll never forget the B&B owner in Canton Clare who, sensing that my then vi-year-old was a bit bored, called effectually to invite the neighborhood kids over. Soon they were all in the lawn, playing croquet and having a grand old time.

Nihon
As foreign visitors to Nippon know, sometimes the locals volition keep their distance. Not then when y'all're traveling with babies or children. When nosotros took our viii-month-sometime daughter to Japan, the air rang with calls of "kawaii" (cute!). Nosotros were constantly surrounded past people who wanted meet us. Ok, they wanted to concord and coo at the cute western baby. Merely nosotros found that far from being a hindrance, traveling with a baby opened doors for u.s.. At markets, vendors offered u.s.a. tastes and we didn't have to hunt downwardly the geishas in Kyoto for a photo, they asked to pose with the states! Yeah, the time modify was a difficult adjustment, and took several days. Only getting baby supplies was a snap. In Japan, one simply uses the words "diapaah" and "wetto tissue" (wet wipe) to get what you need.

Morocco
I was a chip nervous taking my teenage daughter to Morocco. I was worried she'd concenter too much of the wrong kind of attending. But the greeting we got at that place was at one and the aforementioned fourth dimension warm and respectful; and the adventures were non-terminate. One day, nosotros rode camels on the embankment, on some other we went to a local grandmother'south home to learn how to make her family unit recipes. And simply walking through the souks (markets) of Fes, Essaouira and Marrakech was both a treat and an education, a magical mystery tour of serpent charmers, brilliant piles of herbs and spices and lots and lots of henna-opportunities. (Nosotros indulged one time; the expensive manus designs were gone by the next day). All in all, it was a fascinating education for my girls to visit this aboriginal culture, see how dissimilar the gender roles were and also meet how information technology, every bit a culture is irresolute in then many ways.

Guatemala
I retrieve nosotros all plant Guatemala to be a place of sensory overload. Kept apart from the balance of the earth for xxx years by a brutal ceremonious war (that concluded in the 1990'due south) Guatemala has, more almost places, its traditional civilisation intact. So when you go to the modest towns off Lake Atitlan, you still see women wearing their native and very colorful Mayan costumes—not for the tourists, but considering that is what they wear on a daily ground. Religious processions air current through the streets and people still come down from small mountain communities to sell their handcrafted goods at market (the market at Chichicastanengo is an especial curiosity). Best of all, nosotros got to interact in a meaningful way with the people of Guatemala, doing some volunteer work at a local school off Lake Atitlan; and helping the teens at another school in Antigua create an elaborate alfombra (carpet of flowers) for the Easter processions there. The photo shows my younger daughter working on that.
Yep, yous'll see a lot of hardship and poverty in Guatemala. Merely you'll also meet a people whose resilience and courage is remarkable.

Poland
I took my younger daughter to Poland on a pilgrimage of sorts, to trace my grandmother's heritage. I did so knowing that much of what we saw would be dark, and possibly too adult, for a then 8-year-quondam to fully understand. Amid other places, we visited Auschwitz and the Warsaw Uprising Museum (which chronicled the total destruction of the city at the end of World War II). And these were, without question, difficult visits, though ultimately I think my girl learned a great corporeality about history and her heritage.
What nosotros weren't expecting was how cute the country was and how intriguing its castles, and salt mines and medieval festivals and ancient cities would be for both of us. I'd always full-bodied on the sorrowful part of Poland'south history, only we found groovy joy in visiting here.

Colombia
Here's one family-friendly destination that, non so long ago, was too dangerous to visit. Today, Colombia is safe plenty for kids (and for all family members), plus it's affordable and user-friendly. Because of its location at the northern tip of the continent, it's the cheapest and fastest country in South America to get to from the Us. In one case there, the forcefulness of the dollar against the Colombian peso makes expenses easier (instance: a meal for four in a squeamish eating house costs the equivalent of $12). It also holds all the elements that attract visitors to all of South America, in just one country: the Andes mountains, the Amazon rain woods, beach towns on both its Atlantic and its Pacific coast (with very different personalities for each surface area), java regions, and beautifully preserved colonial cities.
Cartagena is an excellent gateway, cheers to its orchid-colored colonial-era buildings, its many excellent hotels and restaurants, and its adventures right outside the city. Pictured is the mud volcano that my teenaged daughter, her friend, and I climbed and and so bathed in. From Cartagena, nosotros also went swimming in a "pink body of water" (an inland body of h2o that maintains that bright hue naturally thanks to the micro-organisms that live in it) and snorkeling around islands that are virtually an hour's ferry ride from the city. In Medellin, the kids enjoyed local genius Botero'southward oversized human sculptures, traveling by funicular to see mural-covered neighborhoods, and visiting an extraordinary aquarium and highly interactive science playground, right in the heart of the city.
